In this project, I explored materials and tensile strength, using vacuum-forming and knotted ropes to stabilize a table in a whimsical style.

It all started in Egypt..

Rope making is a prehistoric skill dating back to 28,000 years ago. It is first made popular with ancient Egyptians. One of the ways they used rope was to tie up batches of carefully organized papyrus reed to construct reed boats. They used the first boats in the world mainly for fishing.

I wanted to make use of the history of ropes and curiosity to create a design that lets other people also be fascinated as I was for the strength of ropes.

Proof of Concept Prototype

I chose utility ropes for its technical  purpose to anchor and secure objects, and a cotton rope that reminds me of boat ropes that I see from often traveling in a ferry where I was from in Hong Kong.

The rope samples are done with self-tightening knots at the bottom, with the middle part left for artistic explorations. Each sample acts as an anchor to secure the floating MDF board onto the upside down T-base, like tying a ship to a dock, but in a way that stops it from moving in all sides.
