Use Your Voice

Floor Lamp

+Concept

The Use Your Voice floor lamp is part of a collection I designed, called Compose.

As part of a collection...

Use Your Voice is about celebrating the power of believing in ourselves through everything, and taking each experience as it comes, learning from it, and allowing ourselves to evolve naturally.

On its own...

Use Your Voice asks us all to embrace our experiences good and bad, to be who we want to be. Words matter, and they are a powerful tool to create ourselves!

+Ideation

I wanted the form to remind someone of a way-finder, because we are our own wayfinders.

Inspired by the shape of a tie, I explored options from a movable structure to an abstract form of a twist in the knot.

+Construction and Specs

Traditional materials meet modern technology

Since the lamp is about different experiences that we gather through time, I wanted the lamp to have elements of the old and the new, to further illustrate the idea of growth and evolution!

The design uses traditional woodworking methods of biscuit joinery. I chose stained natural oak to give a graphic effect on the design, and then I used PolyJet 3D printing to create my lampshade because it is an ombre, textured form that can be reproduced easily with 3D printing.

For my lampshade prototype, I used Vero and Vero-Clear photopolymer as the plastic for 3D-printing.

+The Booklet

Is an experimental way of designing philosophical messages through visual learning and function.

I designed a specific message of moving forward by believing in yourself in each piece of furniture. It is explained in a little annotated sketch, which I thought would be fun to put into a little booklet!

The booklet is called "A Visual Guide To Composing," as I love the idea of anyone believing they have the power of a musician to compose the way they live their life, just like a musician composing a song script, from nothing but five static lines.
